Learn About Inconel 718
Inconel 718 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium alloy comprising of considerable quantities of iron, niobium, and molybdenum and also smaller amounts of aluminum and titanium. It synthesizes corrosion resistance and high strength with outstanding weldability, including resilience to cracking after welding. The alloy has outstanding creep-rupture strength at temperatures up to 700 oC (1300 oF). Used in gas turbines, rocket engines, spacecraft, nuclear reactors, pumps, and tooling.
Inconel 718 alloy is a nickel-based superalloy that has good resistance to corrosion, high strength at ambient temperature, and excellent creep and low energy strengths at high temperature. Thus the alloy has been used for many different uses for example gas turbines, jet motors, steam generators, and fission and fusion reactor structures (1-10). Lately, the alloy has been used for the beam window and other parts of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) accelerator, and was chosen as a back-up substance for certain components of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) under construction at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) as well as other large scale accelerators (11-16). In those applications, the alloy has a complex composition of austenitic matrix and precipitated c0 and c00 phases produced by a normal heat treatment comprising solution annealing and aging (17).
It is known that high fluence chemical of this composite structure undergoes minimal radiation-induced solidifying as well as softening with significant decrease in ductility (7,11-13). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations (14,15,16) reveal that superlattice spots diffracted from the c0 and c00 precipitates disappeared from the diffraction patterns of the aged Inconel 718 after radiotherapy to a small fraction of 1 dpa. The dose-dependent softening was described by the radiation-induced dissolution of the hard precipitates (13-16).
